Top 10 Tom

The Politico has an article up on the Top 10 political upsets of 2008. There were a couple other congressional races on the list (IL-14, LA-2), but one was a special election and the other a runoff, respectively. I guess if we wanted to be technical we could say that Perriello over Goode was the biggest Election Day congressional upset in the entire nation - nevermind that recount thingy.

Thanks to Politico for noticing, and thanks to the exhaustive work of our volunteers, fellow staff, and Tom who made it possible.

I have been reading about this Eden's Curve deal. While I will take Tom over Goode any day of the week, it's hard for me to swallow attacking someone for supporting a film. Guess my liberal is showing..

The campaign did not attack Goode at all for this film, until it became public knowledge that Goode was using congressional resources(i.e., his Danville congressional office's fax) and, therefore, tax payer money for non-official business. That is very acceptable pushback. We did not buy into the gay-bating, even when the DCCC pleaded with us. The blogs went crazy on the topic though. And we really didn't have to do anything, Goode completely mishandled the subject.

From my perspective on the ground, this story did not have a big effect on the election outside of Danville/Pittslyvania County. Nobody else really cared.

Thanks for the clarification. It just struck me as odd that Politico used that as a rationale for Goode's loss.

It's because it seems like a super-sexy story on its face, but its effect within the district was short-lived.

Drew, You are correct about the impact of the film flap on the rest of the district. The people at the lake where not aware of it at all. Tom won the race because he did great retail politics and because we all worked so hard for him. Thanks again for all you did. Your advice and leadership to all of the offices you brought on board was a great help to all of us.
