The Oscars

I thought that Hugh Jackman did a great job hosting the Oscars this year. The juxtaposition of Wolverine being a great singer and dancer was pretty sweet. I was touched and, admittedly, teary-eyed by the Ledger family's acceptance of Heath's Oscar win for Best Supporting Actor. I enjoyed having previous Oscar winners reflect on the performances of the Oscar nominees, and I was happy that Slumdog Millionaire won for Best Picture.

What were your thoughts?

And great job to Darren for correctly predicting all of the major awards.

I missed about half the telecast, but (aside from the overlong and semi-ridiculous "hooray musicals!" number) I thought Jackman was surprisingly good. I hope the Academy pursues this non-comedian-host format in future shows; it seems to work more broadly than topical humor does alone.

I admit, I got misty when Ledger won, as well. A very special moment, to be certain.

I actually enjoyed the "hooray musicals" number, because, well, I have enjoyed most of the musicals that have come out within the last decade: Moulin Rouge, Chicago, Sweeny Todd, and Enchanted. So I enjoyed it and Beyonce was spectacular. She and Queen Latifa just killed their songs.

Also, that part fit in well with the montages on Comedy and Action/Adventure, the point being, that these three sections generally get overlooked by the Academy, but still contribute to Hollywood viewership.

I definetly enjoyed the Oscars this year (I'm a movie dork, so I enjoy them every year). The one point of disagreement I have with you is the schtick of the previous winners fawning over the nominees. Why couldn't we actually see clips of their performances instead of hearing about how great they were? Also, by far the worst presentation of the recently departed section of the Oscars. Truly egregious there.

P.S. Beyonce was awesome as always.
